How To Plan Out Your Projects

How to attack you projects

So you have decided to tackle a project around your house.  That's good.  Now what?

You need to have a plan...

Step 1.  Determine if whatever you're fixing actually needs fixing, (if it isn't broke, don't fix it).  Properly applying this step is key to not wasting your Saturday. :)

Step 2.  Do you have the skill set to handle the task at hand?

If you are not comfortable with electrical wiring, leave it to someone who is.  If you don't know what that pipe is or does, call a plumber.  If you're not sure if the roof will stay up when you're done building that new man cave, call a contractor.  Don't be afraid to punt the football to a pro sometimes.

Step 3.  Have the right tools.

This is probably the most important step of them all in the handyman field.  Trying to replace a head gasket on your car with a pair of pliers just isn't going to cut it.  Using, or not having, the right tools can make the job take longer, making you frustrated and can lead to heavy drinking/therapy.  Both of these things can eat up your whole weekend.

So, the next time you have a project to do, apply these steps for a greater chance of success.

And of course no blog would be a blog without a picture of my favorite helper resting in a box after a long hard day.

  1. I comonly find that when I start a project, I have to do it in sections. Gather tool. Plan project out. Gather the things I forgot. Start project. Give up. Make husband finish the project. Complain to him that he did it wrong. Finish project with an attitude.

  2. Have the right tools!? Do I have to? :P That would definitely be the hardest part of following this diagnostic.
